Catskill, NY, Tenants Demand Strong Good Cause Eviction Protections

Catskill, NY, October 8, 2024 – Catskill, NY, leaders will meet with the public for the Village Board Meeting on Wednesday, October 9, at 6:30 PM. Passing a strong version of Good Cause Eviction in Catskill will give eligible tenants a right to lease renewal, protections against unfair evictions, and the ability to challenge unreasonable rent hikes. If you pay your rent and don’t break the lease, you should be able to stay in your home and negotiate down sharp rent hikes.

Six cities in New York state have passed Good Cause Eviction – including Albany, Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Ithaca, Beacon, and Newburgh – which gives renters more rights. Catskill must follow suit. Good Cause Eviction is on the agenda for the Catskill village board meeting.

“Good Cause Eviction is the most logical step for Catskill to take in protecting renters rights. Since the pandemic, our community and HCHC have been continuously negotiating with, and battling, our representatives to make tenants rights the forefront issue to address. We are now at a crucial moment in the history of the Hudson Valley that sees lifetime residents being displaced at historical numbers. We urge our elected officials, after a five-year standstill, please move forward with Good Cause!” - Tanya Jackson, Executive Director, Hudson/Catskill Housing Coalition

Tell the Village of Catskill's leadership to pass a strong version of Good Cause Eviction protections to bring stability to our community.
